An Arizona ticket matched four out of five numbers plus the Powerball in last Wednesday’s Powerball drawing. The player won $50,000 despite missing the $71 million jackpot by one number. The Arizona Lottery reported that as of Thursday evening, no one had claimed the prize. The ticket was sold at a QuikTrip in the Ahwatukee area of Phoenix. The winning numbers on Wednesday were 21, 26, 30, 45, and 47. The Powerball number was 23, with a 3x Power Play.
Arizona Lottery players can now purchase cards online through Jackpocket.
Powerball tickets start at just $2, and for an additional $1, you can add the Power Play option to potentially multiply your non-jackpot winnings. In Arizona, you can purchase these tickets from over 3,000 retailers across the state or online via Jackpocket, an app that has been available in Arizona since January.
Here’s how you play:
- Choose five numbers between 1 and 69 for the white balls.
- Pick one number between 1 and 26 for the red Powerball.
The chances of winning any of the nine possible prizes are 1 in 24.9, with prizes ranging from $4 to $1 million. However, hitting the jackpot is significantly harder, with odds of 1 in 292.2 million. To win the grand prize, you must match all five white ball numbers and the red Powerball number.
The Powerball jackpot is currently rising to $97 million.
Saturday's jackpot went unclaimed, pushing the estimated prize for Monday's (May 8) drawing to $97 million. While $97 million is undoubtedly a life-changing amount, even after taxes, it’s worth noting that most recent jackpots have soared well into the nine-figure range, like last November's record $2.04 billion jackpot.

The recent $50K Powerball win is one of several significant prizes in Arizona over the past two months. In March, two players hit all six numbers in the Triple Twist. On March 15, a player in Surprise won $1.5 million, followed by another player from Phoenix who won $225,000 six days later. Earlier in April, a player in Chandler won the Triple Twist for $265,000, and that same night, a Scottsdale ticket won $10,000 in the Mega Millions drawing.
Powerball is available in 45 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. Arizona, with its population of about 7.5 million, constitutes roughly 2% of the population eligible to play Powerball. In 2021, Arizona ranked 21st in Lottery sales at $631.9 million, indicating a relatively lower probability of producing a jackpot winner compared to other states.
Last November’s historic $2.04 billion jackpot was claimed by a player in Altadena, CA, just north of Pasadena in the Los Angeles area. California, the most populous state, had the third-highest Lottery sales in 2021 at $8.4 billion, following Florida and New York.
