Top Ways To Bet On The Cardinals

Cardinals games are going to attract a ton of betting action this season and well into the future. Legal online sportsbooks will be ready each time the team steps on the field. NFL odds come out early in the week, so you’ll have plenty of time to get your bets in before kickoff. When you check out game listings, you’ll see odds for the main pregame bets.

Team Moneyline Spread Totals
Seattle Seahawks +105 +2.5 (-110) Over 51.5 (-110)
Arizona Cardinals -125 -2.5 (-110) Under 51.5 (-110)

The NFL is the top game in town at online sportsbooks. Each of these wager types bring plenty of bettors to the window. Here’s what you need to know.

NFL Moneyline Betting

The moneyline bet is simple to understand and easy to place. Just pick which side you think will win the game and click the odds to proceed. Here’s an example courtesy of DraftKings AZ.

  • Seattle Seahawks +105
  • Arizona Cardinals -125

Odds for moneyline favorites are negative. The numbers are positive for underdogs. The closer the range, the tighter the game oddsmakers are expecting.

NFL Point Spread Betting

Sportsbooks set a spread for each NFL game. It’s basically like a margin of victory that you have to factor into your decision making. Here is a spread bet example from BetMGM Arizona.

  • Seattle Seahawks +2.5 (-110)
  • Arizona Cardinals -2.5 (-110)

The choices are the favorite minus the points or the underdog plus the number. The side you pick has to cover the spread for your bet to be a winner.

NFL Totals Betting

This bet type is all about how many points the two teams will combine for. Bettors get to decide on the estimate set by oddsmakers. Here is a totals bet from Caesars Sportsbook AZ.

  • Over 51.5 (-110)
  • Under 51.5 (-110)

For our example, an Over bettor is expecting 52 points or more to be scored. Those who bet on the Under are hoping to see 51 points or less on the board.

During the weekly runup to NFL games, all three of the above bet types will be a big topic of discussion: which side will win, who will cover, and where will the total land. Sportsbooks add to the conversation by providing the odds for each contest.

Arizona player props and futures

Betting on Murray or the NFL MVP is hardly the only futures bet you can place. Your options range from things like defensive and offensive player of the year to rookie of the year and more. Here are some of the most common futures odds you’ll likely find at online sportsbooks in Arizona:

Player props are different from futures. That’s because you are wagering on how a player will perform and what that player achieves, not what accolades they receive for the season.

Some of the more common player props you’ll come across include the following (though this is just a very tiny selection compared to what you’ll find):

  • NFL rushing leader
  • NFL passing leader
  • First overall NFL draft selection
  • Specific quarterback number of interceptions thrown
  • Specific receiver number of receiving touchdowns

You can also wager on team props and futures. Here are a few popular ones, including some game day props:

  • Over/under total wins for the season
  • Special teams or defensive touchdowns
  • Over/under number of field goals in a game
  • AFC champions
  • NFC champions
  • Division champions
  • First player to score in a game
  • First team to score in a game

How Did The Cardinals Do Last Year?

The 2020 campaign was the second for both head coach Kliff Kingsbury and star QB Kyler Murray in Arizona. The previous year, the team went 5-10-1 and finished in last place in the NFC West. Heading into the new season, the hope was for some marked progress.

After entering the Week 8 bye with a record of 5-2, it looked like the goal was going to be cleared by a wide margin. The Cards entered the second half of the season looking like legitimate playoff contenders. It wasn’t meant to be.

The team closed out the year on a 3-6 run to finish up at 8-8. Despite the disappointing finish, they just missed out on a playoff spot in the NFC due to a tiebreaker. Offensively, the team showed plenty of flashes, and there was also an improvement on the defensive side of the ball.

Arizona Cardinals coaches and bench staff

Players alone don’t win football games. It takes a lot of work from the coaches and support staff on the sidelines, too. The Cardinals have had a few changes in their coaching over the past decade, but there are hopes the newest coach in Arizona will bring success and stick around for a while.

For 2021, the Arizona Cardinals coaches are:

  • Head coach: Kliff Kingsbury
  • Offensive coordinator: Sean Kugler
  • Defensive coordinator: Vance Joseph
  • Special teams coordinator: Jeff Rodgers

Since 2000, the Cardinals have had the following head coaches:

Coach Tenure
Kliff Kingsbury 2019-present
Steve Wilks 2018
Bruce Arians 2013-2017
Ken Wisenhunt 2007-2012
Dennis Green 2004-2006
Dave McGinnis 2000-2003
Vince Tobin 1996-2000

Every NFL team has a stadium it calls home. The Cardinals play their home games at State Farm Stadium. It originally opened in 2006 and was named University of Phoenix Stadium. In 2018, State Farm purchased naming rights to the stadium in an 18 year deal.

How to watch and listen to Arizona Cardinals games

For Cardinals fans, catching a game is one of the joys of the NFL season. Not all fans can attend the games in person, so having the option to watch on television, listen on the radio or catch it via a streaming service is the next best thing.

If you’re looking to watch the Cardinals on television, your options really depend on which network will be carrying the game. Some games will be on NBC, others on FOX, and even others on CBS. ESPN and the NFL Network will get in on the action too.

Some fans choose to pay for NFL Sunday Ticket, which allows them to watch every NFL game on the schedule.

Some games do stream on services like Amazon Prime, though you have to have a subscription to view them. The Yahoo Sports app will also have some games.

A brief history of the Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals have a long and storied history in professional football, dating back to 1898 when a group of players formed from the Morgan Athletic Club to play football in Chicago. Here are some of the key dates throughout the history of the franchise:

  • 1898 - Founded as the Morgan Athletic Club before acquired by Chris O’Brien and renamed the Racine Normals.
  • 1901 - The color of used game jerseys from the University of Chicago were maroon, which led to O’Brien renaming the team the Racine Street Cardinals.
  • 1920 - The Cardinals become a charter member of the American Professional Football Association, which then became the National Football League in 1922.
  • 1922 - Team name changed to the Chicago Cardinals.
  • 1925 - NFL champions following the Pottsville Maroons being suspended.
  • 1947 - NFL champions over the Philadelphia Eagles.
  • 1960 - The Cardinals move to St. Louis.
  • 1974, 1975, and 1982 - Playoff appearances for the St. Louis Cardinals.
  • 1987 - Organization moves and becomes the Phoenix Cardinals.
  • 1994 - Team officially becomes the Arizona Cardinals.
  • 1998 - First postseason win since 1947.
  • 2008 - Cardinals lose Super Bowl XLIII to the Pittsburgh Steelers, 27-23.
  • 2009 - First regular season with 10 wins since arriving in Arizona.
  • 2009 - NFC West champions.
  • 2014 - Best regular-season record in Arizona at 11-5.
  • 2014 - Wild card playoff berth.
  • 2015 - New franchise regular-season win record of 13-3.
  • 2015 - Lose NFC Championship game to Carolina Panthers, 49-15.

Will there be a State Farm sportsbook?

State Farm Stadium could be the home of a retail sportsbook operating under a sports betting license held by the Cardinals.

Given that the leagues and teams have lobbied hard for more inclusion in sports betting, it seems inevitable that the Cardinals will pursue one of the 10 available commercial sportsbook licenses in Arizona.

Arizona law reserves that number of licenses for professional teams like the Cardinals. After the license, they will have the option to build a brick-and-mortar sportsbook at the stadium.

Some other states allow teams and the stadium to offer an NFL betting lounge with televisions and seating. Additionally, there is staff on site to help people download and get started on a betting app on their phones.

The sportsbook at State Farm Stadium will almost certainly plug online betting as much if not more than the retail sportsbook. In essence, the sportsbook is as much about marketing as it is about taking bets.

Expect the sportsbook to be open to people beyond those watching the Cardinals play. There will likely be an outdoor entrance to the sportsbook so it can be open year-round and not just when games are taking place.

Potential partners for the Cardinals

Although the Cardinals might technically hold a sports betting license in the future, they won’t actually run the sportsbook.

Almost certainly, the team will instead contract with a gambling company to take care of that. The Cardinals have an active gambling partnership with the Gila River Indian Community, but it’s uncertain whether that will extend to sports betting.

None of the Gila River casino properties have offered sports betting in the past. Moreover, the tribe is eligible for one of the 10 tribal sportsbook licenses. So, if the property wants, it can go it alone and hope it beats out competing tribes for one of those licenses.

The NFL’s three national sports betting partners, meanwhile, already have plans for Arizona. The NFL works with DraftKings, FanDuel, and Caesars as of April 2021. However, DraftKings already announced that the company will partner with TPC Scottsdale. FanDuel sports betting, meanwhile, is partnered with the Phoenix Suns, and Caesars has a deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

What it boils down to is that the high profile of the Cardinals could result in an unexpected player, perhaps BetMGM or PointsBet, getting into Arizona through a deal with State Farm Stadium and the team.

Arizona Cardinals FAQ

Michael Bidwill, whose family has owned the team since 1933, is the current owner of the Cardinals.

According to Forbes, as of September 2020, the Arizona Cardinals were valued at $2.325 billion.

The Arizona Cardinals signal caller in 2021 is Kyler Murray.

Much to the chagrin of Cardinals fans everywhere, the team has never captured a Super Bowl victory. They did, however, play in the Super Bowl in 2008, losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the final minutes, 27-23.
